On May 2, 1969, James LeRoy Iverson was found guilty by a jury in Grand Forks County of the crime of murder in the first degree of Diane Patricia Bill and of the crime of murder in the second degree of Carol Mayers, the two cases having been consolidated for trial. He appealed to this court, which affirmed the convictions in State v. Iverson, 187 N.W.2d 1 (N.D.1971), cert. denied sub nom. Iverson v. North Dakota, 404 U.S. 956, 92 S.Ct. 322, 30 L.Ed.2d 273 (1971). He then petitioned for habeas corpus in the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, and that…
