You have asked several questions about the proper interpretation of section 971.17, Stats., which deals with criminal defendants found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. That statute is set forth in full below:

971.17 Legal effect of finding of not guilty because of mental disease or defect. (1) When a defendant is found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, the court shall order him to be committed to the department to be placed in an appropriate institution for custody, care and treatment until discharged…
