This is an unemployment compensation case.

On December 1, 1977 Black Diamond Coal Company (hereinafter Black Diamond), through one of its supervisory personnel, distributed a termination slip to James W. Pickett, Amos Boyd, Leodis Majors, and Johnson T. Morse notifying them that, effective immediately, they were being "laid off" from their jobs at its coal washer number nine located at West Blocton, Alabama.
