The ultimate question in this case presents significant issues about a state government’s ability to allocate insurance benefits by creating distinctions between different classes of individuals. Valjeanne Currie appeals the district court’s entry of summary judgment for the defendant, the Group Insurance Commission (GIC), which provides disability benefits for employees of the state of Massachusetts.
