On November 21, 1991, Timothy A. Cor-win, a minor, acting through his next friend, Robert G. Wolfe, filed a petition for damages *603in the Circuit Court of Jackson County, naming as defendants his parents, David A. Cor-win and Debbie S. Powell, and The Coleman Company, Inc. (hereinafter “Coleman”).
