Unified School District No. 1 is comprised of parts of Ashland and Bayfield counties and part of the district lies within the city of Ashland. A referendum was held at a special election on May 19, 1970, on the question of whether school-building bonds should be authorized. The clerk of the school district called six members of the school board and three members of the common council of the city of Ashland to canvass the returns of the election, which was done on May 20th.
