Plaintiff Sampath Kumaran, a former substitute school teacher and security guard, filed a pro se defamation complaint on June 1, 1990, against two media defendants and two nonmedia defendants. Plaintiff’s complaint alleged that he had been libeled by an article published in the Chicago Tribune (the Tribune) on August 8, 1989.
