Placer County is named after a technique of mining for gold—placer mining—that was used extensively in the Sierra foothills *1090after the discovery of gold in California and until the early years of the 20th century.1 Placer mining is basically a process by which miners build dams, divert waters through flumes or ditches, channel the waters into huge pipes and, ultimately, into nozzles large enough to make one believe that Gulliver himself might have used one to water his garden.
