CALABRIA, Judge.

Michael Bruce Thomas ("defendant") appeals his judgment entered upon a jury verdict finding him guilty of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. We find no error.

I. Background

At a restaurant bar called "Zippers" in Lincolnton, North Carolina, defendant assaulted Bryan Wilfong ("Wilfong") with an octagonal beer mug made of thick glass-"about two inches thick," and "quite heavy."
