In October 1985, the right leg of plaintiff’s decedent, Blondell Brown, who was suffering from diabetes, was amputated below the knee. Subsequently, Ms. Brown sought redress for her injury by filing an action for negligence 1 against appellant R. & G. Orthopedic Appliances and Prosthet-ics, Inc. (R. & G.), a supplier of orthopedic shoes, and Howard University (Howard), which operates Howard University Hospital.
