In 1981, Floyd Wyatt, a federal employee on a military base, filed a Federal Tort Claims Act suit after losing four fingers during operation of a forklift. Following extensive discovery, the parties agreed to a structured settlement in February 1983. 1 The structured settlement, which was acceptable to Wyatt, provided for an initial cash payment of $153,626, and for deferred payments in future years.
