This is an appeal from a grant of summary judgment by a Superior Court judge in a defamation action 2 for the defendant, the Lowell Sun Publishing Company (Sun). The original complaint was based on the Sun’s publication on February 5, 1983, of a newspaper feature entitled “Police log” and headlined: “Officer assaulted; two men charged.” The article reported that Michael J.
