Prior to the inventions hereinafter to be described, which are the subject-matter of this controversy, the common method of stopping bottles was with cork, wood, rubber, or some other resilient material inserted longitudinally into the neck of the bottle, and held there by its elastic lateral pressure in frictional contact with the circumference, supplemented, in cases where gaseous liquids caused internal pressure, by wire or twine on the outside of the bottle head.
