H. N. Meade was, on September 3, 1946, indicted for forgery, Virginia Code, 1942 (Michie), section 4889. The indictment contained two counts, one alleging the forgery of his wife’s signature to a deed of bargain and sale, and the other the utterance of the forged instrument. Upon trial before a jury, the wife of the defendant was called as a witness for the Commonwealth, and, over the objection of the defendant, permitted to testify against him. Meade *777was found guilty, and his punishment fixed- at two years in the penitentiary.
