COYNE, Justice.

Respondent Gerald Holmquist brought an action against the State of Minnesota to recover damages for injuries he received in a one-vehicle accident. Holmquist alleged that the accident was caused by the State’s failure to post a warning sign informing motorists of the narrow shoulder along a stretch of a state trunk highway. Reversing summary judgment in favor of the State, the court of appeals held that the discretionary function exception of the State Tort Claims Act did not provide governmental tort immunity for failure to warn of a defect created by the State.
