OPINION OF THE COURT

FUENTES, Circuit Judge:

In 1994, Kyle Rainey, Nathan Riley, and two coconspirators robbed a jewelry store in Philadelphia. During the robbery, Riley shot and killed the store owner. Following a seven-day trial, the jury found Rainey guilty of first degree murder, two counts of robbery, and other related charges. After the jury deadlocked on whether to impose the death penalty for first degree murder, the sentencing court imposed a mandatory term of life in prison.
