This appeal is from a judgment convicting the defendant of the crime of bribery. The indictment upon which the conviction was obtained charged, in substance, that on the 15th of October, .1900, .the defendant accepted from one Lena Schmitt $550 under an agreement that he, ás a police officer of the city óf New York, would permit her to conduct a house of prostitution at a place specified in the precinct over which he had charge.
