The child brought an action in the Probate and Family Court Department for a judgment of paternity under G. L. c. 209C (1994 ed.).2 The complaint was amended *160to name the mother as a plaintiff in response to the defendant’s claim that the child could not litigate on her own behalf but rather only through a next friend.
