In 1993 Congress enacted the Family and Medical Leave Act to address the serious strains placed on American workers by the ever-increasing demands of the workplace. The Act sought to address problems arising from “the lack of employment policies to accommodate working parents [which] force individuals to choose between job security and parenting” and “inadequate job security for employees who have serious health conditions that prevent them from working for temporary periods.” 29 U.S.C. §§ 2601(a)(3),(4)(2000)(“FMLA”).
