The year 1886 witnessed the last Indian war of this country, unless the single battle of Wounded Knee be regarded as a war. On the 4th of September of that year the last -war party of the Apaches surrendered in the Sierra Madre of Mexico to Oaptain Lawton, of the Fourth Cavalry, acting under the immediate orders of General Miles. This surrender closed an active campaign extending over a period of sixteen months.
