During a rainstorm that had lasted approximately an hour on the night of August 25, 1975, an automobile stalled while it was being operated in one of the four lanes of Nameoki Road, a major traffic artery of the city of Granite City. A passerby, the plaintiff, Archie Vest, offered his help to the driver of the stalled vehicle, Faye Barton. Determining that the battery of the stalled car needed to be “jumped,” plaintiff turned his own vehicle around and parked it in the same lane as the disabled one, “nose to nose” with it.
