After he was indicted in 1999, on two firearm charges that carried enhanced sentences for repeat offenders, see G. L. c. 269, § 10G (c), the defendant moved to withdraw guilty pleas entered in the Holyoke Division of the District Court Department in 1994 and 1996. A judge other than the plea judge ruled on the defendant’s motions. She allowed the defendant’s motion on the 1996 plea, but denied the motion on *520the 1994 plea.
