The defendant has been found guilty under G. L. (Ter. Ed.) c. 268, § 1A, of perjury on two counts of an indictment charging him with making false statements in two applications signed by him for examinations by the board of registration in medicine.

General Laws (Ter. Ed.) c. 268, § 1A, reads as follows: “Except in a judicial proceeding or in a proceeding in a course of justice, no written statement required by law shall be required to be verified by oath or affirmation before a magistrate if it contains or is verified by a written declaration that it is made under the penalties of perjury.…
