On April 17, 2008, this court issued an opinion in which we affirmed the order of the circuit court of Marion County denying the petition for postconviction relief filed by the defendant, William L.B. Thomas. People v. Thomas, 381 Ill. App. 3d 972 (2008). On March 24, 2010, the Illinois Supreme Court vacated our opinion and directed us to reconsider our decision in light of People v. Morris, 236 Ill. 2d 345 (2010). People v. Thomas, 236 Ill. 2d 540 (2010) (supervisory order). In Morris, the supreme court held that the rule of law announced in People v.
