We granted certiorari in the present case, Capital Ford Truck Sales v. U. S. Fire Ins. Co., 180 Ga. App. 413 (349 SE2d 201) (1986), in order to decide whether an “excess” or “umbrella” liability insurance carrier is required to provide first-dollar coverage to the insured, and to defend an action against the insured, if the “primary” or “underlying” insurer has become insolvent.
