Invoking this Court’s original jurisdiction under Art III, § 2, of the Constitution,1 Texas brought this action against New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the Sun Oil Company for an injunction and declaration of rights to settle a controversy as to which State has jurisdiction. to take title to certain abandoned intangible personal property through escheat, a procedure with ancient origins2 whereby a sovereign may acquire title to abandoned property if after a number of years no rightful owner appears.
