On Liability:

This action arose out of an explosion which occurred aboard the purse seiner Ocean Pearl on November 21, 1983. This explosion, which killed the captain of the vessel and injured six crew members, was caused when the crew attempted to "jump start" the stalled engine of the ship by using a combination of oxygen from cylinders supplied by the defendant Samoa Gases and an ether-based starter fluid.
