Defendant Robert Piontkowski appeals from the sentence entered upon a jury verdict in the circuit court of Jackson County finding him guilty of armed robbery of a liquor store. Defendant was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment under the new Illinois sentencing act (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977 Supp., ch. 38, par. 1005 — 3—1 et seq.), and the sole issue on appeal is whether the sentence is excessive under that statute. Defendant contends that the sentence is erroneous in his particular case, relying upon People v. Choate (1979), 71 Ill. App. 3d 267, 389 N.E.2d 670, a recent decision by this court in…
