Following a bench trial defendant, Kenneth Lenninger, was convicted of cruelty to children (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 23, par. 2368), and acquitted of aggravated battery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 12—4(a)). Defendant was sentenced to an extended term of six years’ imprisonment and he appeals.

The testimony adduced at trial disclosed that on March 9,1978, when defendant’s 11-month-old son was admitted to the hospital, he weighed 14 pounds, 2 ounces and had the following injuries: scratches on the face and neck; a broken shoulder; two broken ribs, which had been broken six to eight…
