OPINION

Following a bench trial, defendant, Miguel Deleon, was convicted of first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/9— 1(a)(1) (West 1996)) and attempted first degree murder (720 ILCS 5/8 — 4, 9 — 1(a)(1) (West 1996)). The trial court sentenced him to a mandatory life term for the first degree murder and a consecutive 30-year term for the attempted first degree murder.
