In May, 1992, Dennis Ford (plaintiff) was injured while fleeing from a fire in an apartment building owned by the Boston Housing Authority (BHA). At the time, he was visiting a friend who lived in the building. The friend’s young nephew *624had accidentally started the fire in a mattress. The friend asked the plaintiff to hold the door to the hallway open while he threw the mattress into the hallway and went back into his apartment to get water to douse the flames.
