1. It was a settled doctrine of the common law that no one could maintain a civil action for damages on account of the death of a human being. To remedy this hardship, Lord Campbell, in 1846, introduced in the British Parliament an act to authorize the recovery of damages in cases of the wrongful homicide of a person. This act, which is known in history as Lord Campbell’s act, is the basis for statutes which have been adopted in practically all the States of the American Union.
