This case requires us to decide the extent of a district court’s discretion to modify an agreement as to attorneys’ fees, otherwise awardable under 42 U.S.C. § 1988, which has been submitted to the court pursuant to Fed.R.Civ.P. 23(e) for approval as part of a proposed settlement of a class action civil rights suit. Plaintiffs Mary Jones and other class representatives appeal from a judgment of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Thomas C.
