Since 1843, when the Rhode Island Constitution (constitution) first became effective, the people of this state have enjoyed a constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. R.I. Const, art. 1, sec. 22 (“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”). Despite numerous amendments to and various reenactments of the constitution, the original wording of the “keep and bear aims” clause has remained unchanged.
