I. INTRODUCTION
The most poignant passages in Nicholas Sparks’ bestseller The Notebook limn the twilight of a deep love blighted by a wife’s Alzheimer’s disease. See Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook (Warner Books 1996). At the heart of this case is the suffering of Denise Nathanson (“Mrs. Nathanson”) from Alzheimer’s disease — which resulted in a dispute as to her care between her husband and step-son on one side and her daughter on the other.
