Plaintiff in error was organized January 9,1877, under the general act concerning corporations in force July 1, 1872, as a corporation not for pecuniary profit, under the name of Covenant Mutual Benefit Association. The object for which it was incorporated, as stated in the certificate, was “to affprd financial aid and assistance to the widows, orphans, heirs or devisees of deceased members.” The subsequent act in force July 1, 1893, for the formation of corporations to transact the business of life or accident insurance upon the assessment plan, also provided that any existing domestic…
