In this case, Petitioner, Jere Chatom appeals from the federal district court’s order denying his petition for habeas corpus relief. Following a jury trial, the Circuit Court for Mobile County, Alabama, convicted Chatom of two counts of first degree murder for the shooting deaths of two sheriff’s deputies. The Court of Criminal Appeals of Alabama initially overturned the trial court conviction, however, the Alabama Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, reversed the Court of Criminal Appeal’s decision and remanded the case.
