I. Preliminary Statement

This opinion addresses the post-trial motions of the defendant, The Philadelphia Eagles Football Club (Eagles), to set aside a substantial jury verdict in favor of the plaintiff, Donald Chuy, a former Eagles lineman, on claims of breach of contract and intentional infliction of mental distress. 1 We also consider plaintiff’s motion for a new trial on his defamation claim which the jury resolved in the Eagles favor. The unusual factual background of this case may be summarized as follows.
