Plaintiff in error, hereinafter called defendant, was convicted of counterfeiting and sentenced to imprisonment for 15 years. From the meager report of the trial, and from subsequent correspondence of defendant with the District Judge and the clerk of his court, which correspondence has been certified to this court, the following facts appear or may reasonably be inferred:
