delivered the opinion of the court:

On October 23, 1997, defendant shot Chicago Housing Authority Officer William Henderson in the face with a .22-caliber rifle at close range, breaking the officer’s jaw. At the time of the offense, defendant was 16 years old. Consequently, he was initially the subject of a petition for adjudication of wardship based on the offense (97 JD 13460), but the case was transferred to criminal court on February 4, 1998, pursuant to section 5 — 4(3.3) of the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 (705 ILCS 405/5 — 4 (3.3) (West 1996)).
