CARDAMONE, Circuit Judge:

Upon application of the local police following a shooting and robbery in August 1982, a Superior Court Judge in Connecticut issued a search warrant for a West Haven residence. The ensuing search failed to unearth the instrumentalities of that crime, but did turn up an unregistered gun which later resulted in a federal indictment being lodged against defendant Joseph Travisano. The indictment charged Travisano with possession of an unregistered short barrelled *343Winchester shotgun in violation of 26 U.S.C. §§ 5861 and 5871 (Count One), and, as a previously convicted…
