In 1919 Sam Bowen was the owner of a tract of land in Lee County, known as the Horseshoe Plantation. He owned and operated the plantation during the years 1918 and 1919, having acquired it from. J. L. Hutton, and F. Gr. Jones, of Memphis, who had purchased it from R. L. Hope in 1916.

In June, 1919, Bowen listed the land for sale with Shelton & Ward, a. real estate firm in Memphis, who caused the land to be. advertised for sale in the Memphis papers, and the tract was described in the published advertisement as containing 1,735 acres, of which 800 .were in cultivation.
