The defendant, Dewey Jeffcoat, a white man, was con victed in the Court of General Sessions for Lexington County on a 'charge of having committed an assault and cbattery with intent to kill upon Alex Wise, a colored man. The defendant was sentenced by the late lamented Judge DeVore to serve 4 years at hard labor in the penitentiary or on the public works of Lexington County.
