POSNER, Circuit Judge.

The district court granted summary judgment for the defendant, Sears Roebuck, in this suit charging age discrimina tion in employment (29 U.S.C. §§ 621 et seq.), and dismissed the suit. 687 F.Supp. 388 (N.D.Ill.1988). The plaintiff, Robert Palucki, had risen steadily through the ranks at Sears, where he had started working at the age of 16. By 1981, at the age of 40, he was the manager of the home-appliances division of a Sears store in Park Forest, a suburb of Chicago.
