*577 ¶ 1 On January 14, 2010, defendant was arrested after the victim, Eugene Witherspoon, discovered defendant in Witherspoon's apartment attempting to remove a television set. After a bench trial, defendant was convicted of both residential burglary and aggravated battery of Witherspoon. 720 ILCS 5/19-3(a), 12-4(a) (West 2008). Defendant filed a pro se posttrial motion for a new trial claiming ineffective assistance of trial counsel, which the trial court denied after conducting a preliminary inquiry pursuant to People v. Krankel , 102 Ill. 2d 181 , 189, 80 Ill.Dec. 62 , 464 N.E.2d 1045 (1984).…
