This is a consolidated direct appeal and postconviction appeal. The State charged defendant, Mantrell Johnson, with the aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery of Jose Valadez. Following a jury trial, the trier of fact found defendant guilty of aggravated vehicular hijacking (720 ILCS 5/18 — 4(a)(3) (West 1996)) and armed robbery (720 ILCS 5/18 — 2 (West 1996)).
