Defendant was charged with several counts of attempted murder in the second degree, rape in the third degree and other related charges. At his jury trial, the People introduced evidence establishing that on June 9, 1997, defendant attempted to murder his former girlfriend, Cindia Maldonado, by slashing her numerous times and that on June 17, 1997, he attempted to kill Maldonado’s mother, Miriam Fernandez, and stepfather, Aníbal Cruz, by firing a loaded gun at their vehicle.
