Respondent Parmjit Kaur Dhadda was accused of first-degree kidnapping and first-degree murder in connection with the death of her four-month-old daughter, Amrit Kaur Dhadda, who drowned in the Truckee River. The district court granted respondent’s pretrial petition for a writ of habeas corpus, concluding that the state failed to present sufficient evidence before the grand jury, independent of respondent’s admissions and confessions, to establish the corpus delicti of the charged offenses.
