On April 16, 1925, the grand jury of the city and county of San Francisco returned an indictment against the defendant, Felix Sloper, accusing him of having unlawfully, with malice aforethought, killed one George W. Campbell, a police officer of the city and county of San Francisco on the ninth day of April, 1925. He was subsequently placed upon trial and the jury returned a simple verdict of guilty of murder of the first degree, and the law in such cases adjudges the penalty, which is death, and that penalty was accordingly pronounced by the court upon the verdict as returned.
