In the decade beginning with the year 1890 a considerable body of immigrants known as Ruthenians or Carpatho-Russians settled in the east side of Bridgeport. They were Slavs, spoke a dialect of the Russian language and came from the territory known as Podkarpatska Rus, which lay on the southern slope of the Carpathian Mountains in what was then Hungary. A deeply religious people, they proceeded in the year 1900 to establish a church of their own in Bridgeport. The congregation grew rapidly and the church now occupies a large and valuable edifice.
